VMware Inc. has released VMware Workstation 5.5 beta.

Although the stable version of VMware Workstation is 5.0 (Build 13124), I found 5.5 (Release Candidate now) has supported 64-bits operating systems.

Workstation 5.5 supports virtual machines with 64-bit guest operating systems only on host machines that have one of the supported 64-bit processors:

• AMD Athlon 64, revision D or later
• AMD Opteron, revision E or later
• Intel EM64T VT-capable processors (experimental support)

When you power on a virtual machine with a 64-bit guest operating system, Workstation performs an internal check: if the host CPU is not a supported 64-bit processor, you cannot power on the virtual machine.

VMware Releases Freeware VMWare Player, from OSNews.

VMware Inc. 的 VMware Workstation 大家應該都有聽過或用過, 現在 VMware Inc. 出了一個 Freeware 的版本 VMware Player (download here).

WMware Player 是一個可以輕易執行 Virtual machine 的軟體, 大部份的用途應該是用在 Demo 上, 因為 VMware Workstation 是需要 serial number 來完成 registration, 否則只有試用 30 天. 在客戶的電腦上可能就沒那麼方便.

第二個功能是可以用 VMware Technology Network 的 Virtual Machine Center, 它有一些 ISV 或是 Open source 協力廠商作好的 pre-built virtual machines, 可以下載直接使用.

那他和 VMware Workstation 的差別在哪呢? 它不能編 virtual machine 的 configuration (virtual hardware, sharing folders), 也不能裝 VMware-tools (中文說明, 不過 virtual machine 已經裝好就是用那個設定, 包括 Screen Resolution), 其它基本功能我還試不出來有不一樣的地方. 可是 WMware Workstation 5.5 size 有 79 MB, WMware Player 卻只有 28 MB.
